In our last post "Autumn: Worst Time of Year for Road Traffic Accidents" we talked about ways in which we can avoid car accidents by preparing our vehicles for poor road conditions, but we should also prepare ourselves. Many road traffic accidents are the result of the recklessness of drivers who do not adapt their driving to the weather conditions and it is often these drivers, rather than the weather, that are the real hazard.
Here are a few steps you can take to help you minimise your risk of being liable for an accident during bad weather.
Check the Weather Forecast Before Setting Off.
If bad weather is predicted do you really need to travel, is it possible to delay the trip until better conditions? If the trip is vital then take busier roads, even if the route is slightly longer, as they are more likely to be gritted and will be safer than county roads.
Defrost Your Windscreen and Mirrors Before Leaving;
Don’t wait for it to happen as you are driving down the road. Also clear all snow and ice from windows, headlights and mirrors, failure to do so increases the risk of accidents.
Allow More Time for Journeys
driving slowly means if you skid the chances of obtaining a personal injury are lower.
Increase the Distance Between You and the Car in Front
leaving you more time to react. If there is snow and ice on the roads, use high gears to reduce the need for sudden deceleration or acceleration.
Remain alert at all times as not everyone on the road will be experienced in driving in these conditions.
If visibility is significantly impaired then pull over until it’s safe to drive again
What to do if You are in a Road Traffic Accident that Isn't Your Fault.
In for are involved in a road traffic accident due the reckless behaviour of another driver then you may be entitled to make a road traffic accident compensation claim.
