Whichever festival it is that you will celebrating this 'holiday season', it's likely your preparations are well under way by now. For me it's Christmas, and so the lights are up, the tree has taken over the living room and the office is abuzz with anticipation of Friday's office Christmas Party. This year there's slightly more buzz about it than usual and that's largely because of what happened last year. Namely - food poisoning.

Clik here to view.As a result, we've had to find a new venue for this year's celebration, having partied at the same place each year for as long as anyone in the office can remember.
Last Friday was the busiest day of the year for Christmas parties, with restaurants, hotels & other venues working overtime to stuff in as many turkey dinners in as short a time as possible.
Inevitably, the influx of temporary staff drafted in at this time of year with little experience of the venue or in some cases, service, rushing around to meet the hugely increased demand can lead to instances of reduced hygiene or quality of food preparation.
An upset tummy after one-too many stale vol au vents is one thing, but food poisoning can lead to anything from a day off work to extended hospitalisation. Now, picture that for an entire office load of people and you can see why we had to think very carefully about whether we should even have a party this year.
We are, thankfully, but we have made the venue bend over backwards in order to satisfy our determination that we won't see a re-occurance this year.
Food poisoning doesn't only happen at Christmas of course, it can happen at any time and anywhere.
Have You Suffered Food Poisoning?
If you’ve suffered from serious food poisoning as a result of food consumed in a restaurant or commercial venue, then you may be entitled to make a personal injury claim. Food poisoning is classed as a type of personal injury as it is often a result of someone else’s negligence, and you are legally entitled to claim.
In order to proceed with a food poisoning claim we would need to know:
- The time and date the food was purchased.
- Method and evidence of payment.
- Confirmation of food purchased.
- If the food was consumed within 24 hours prior to the poisoning
- That medical advice was sort
The first three points can all be confirmed by your receipt so remember to keep hold of this (or, if required, obtain a copy from the event organiser). Also remember to keep evidence of any personal injury related expenses such as receipts for medication and / or travel expenses.
As with all personal injury claims it is important to seek medical advice, your doctor can confirm if what you are suffering from is food poisoning and note this on your medical records.
As there are often a larger number of people all eating a similar meal at events like Christmas Parties or Weddings, it’s likely that other people in your group may have suffered and may, therefore, also have a claim. The more people involved in a group claim for food poisoning, with supporting medical evidence, the stronger the case so it’s worth checking with others from your party.
You may be able to claim for food poisoning, even if you were poisoned in another country.
