You may have noticed I haven't been posting quite so often recently, which has mostly been due to the launch of the new mayiclaim website. Typically, the final phases of preparing to launch a new site are fraught with last-minute drama, as the person responsible for the on-site SEO (which would be me) frantically tries to ensure that links to established pages on the 'old' site are redirected to their equivalent pages on the 'new' site - so we don't lose any search engine traffic.

I know, you must be on the edge of your seats right now, wondering how that all went aren't you?

What do you mean, 'No'?

Okay, so it may not sound that exciting, but if I get it wrong it could take months of work to rebuild the site's status amongst it's peers within the search results, so it can be pretty stressful.

Or so I thought.

I was about to be given an insite into what true stress really feels like. Whilst darting between keyword metrics and .htaccess files, I noticed that of all the different types of injury claims we deal with, even really common ones like those from Car Accidents or Accidents at Work, it's actually Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that has seen the highest number of searches this month - up to 6500 searches in the UK.

Post Traumatic Stress DisorderPost Traumatic Stress Disorder (also known as PTSD or "Shell Shock") is unfortunately on the rise, particularly amongst young people. One thing that may have influenced its popularity with search engines is that PTSD has featured heavily in the news recently, particulary with regards to its impact soldiers coming back from active service.

In a recent study, researchers looked at 14,000 UK service personnel who had served in wars in Iraq or Afghanistan. The results highlighted a particular issue in younger men who had combat roles or had a traumatic experience. It showed that although overall criminal activity was slightly lower in military personnel than in people of the same age in the wider population (94% of men returning from combat zones will not offend) there was a “stark difference" in men under 30, with over 20% of them committing a violent offence (compared to 6.7% of young men outside the military).

The report showed that being in the junior ranks, deployment in a combat role and experiencing traumatic events, such as being shot at, all linked to an increased risk of violence when returning from duty.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms

People react differently to experiencing trauma, for some it takes the form of almost uncontrollable bouts of anger & rage, for others PTSD can mean:

Irritability towards others & muscle tension

  • Nightmares and difficulty sleeping
  • Flashbacks - reliving memories of traumatic events, leading to sweating, headaches and nausea
  • Feelings of depression, anxiety, guilt and grief
  • Feeling detached from friends and family

The “biggest single obstacle” to tackling the problem is the reluctance of young men to admit they may not be coping, according to Prof Simon Wessely, from King’s College London. This is echoed by Surgeon Capt John Sharpley, a Ministry of Defence mental healthcare expert, agreed that getting young soldiers to ask for help was a “major issue”. “Stigma is a really big problem. The study shows there is a link between mental health symptoms and violent offending”.

The good news is that PTSD can be overcome. The first step is to get a diagnosis from your GP or healthcare provider. After that therapy has been proved to be very effective. However Private therapy can be costly and therefore making a claim for Post Traumatic Stress Compensation can help ease the financial burden of recovery.

PTSD can cause problems with all areas of a person’s life including work, family and friendships and it doesn't just affect veterans - but anyone who has experienced a traumatic event. It is a natural emotional reaction to a deeply shocking experience; essentially it is a normal reaction to an abnormal situation
