You May 'Think Bike' But Cars are Main Cause of Motorcycle Accidents

motorbike accident claim think bikeIf you've read the odd May I Say... post from me in the past, you'll know that I occasionally like to raid the archives for retro-tastic public information film. If there's the slimmest connection with the subject matter - I'll find a way to shoe-horn one in. Today, Ladies and Gents - I've hit the jackpot. One of my top five (yes, I have a top five) public information films is the Jimmy Hill "Think Bike" ad. I have no idea why I like it so much, but it could be because of the outrageous casting - who in their right mind cast 70's Sports Broadcasting Legend Jimmy Hill as the patron saint of motorcyclists? I suspect some form of twisted genius!

The “Think Bike” ads have been around for nearly 40 years. Whether it was actor Edward Judd in 1975 or Jimmy Hill in 1978 telling us to “think once, think twice, think bike” or the dramatic crash at the t-junction in 2006 (30 motorcyclists are killed or injured every day at junctions) and a slight change in slogan to look once, look twice and look again, take longer to look for bikes.

They took a slightly different approach in 2010 when they launched the “think bike, thinkbiker” ad, encouraging us not only to look out for bikes but also to think of the person on the bike.

We mentioned in an article earlier in the year that statistics show bikers are 40 times more likely to be killed on the road than a car driver or passenger. They are 75 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured (KSI) in serious or fatal crashes than car drivers when casualty rates are compared per billion miles travelled. And with 5,247 serious motorcyclistsinjuries in road collisions in Great Britain, it’s not surprising that campaigns to raise awareness of the importance of “thinking bike” exist.

Historically the number of deaths of motorcycleriders rose between 1994-98 and 2003, from 434 to 665 but has since declined. In 2011, 362 motorcycle riders died as a result of a road accident.

80% of motorbike accidents are the result of someone else’s negligence, so if you are a motorcyclist and have been involved in an accident through no fault of your own, you may be entitled to claim compensation for your injuries and any damage to your motorcycle, leathers and helmet.
