4 Letter Words You Don’t Want to Hear in Winter - Slip, Trip & Fall.

winter slip trip fallLong-range forecasters are warning that this winter could deliver the most severe weather for more than 60 years, and with us already having already experienced the worst storm in 60 years earlier in the month it seems they may be onto something.

Experts in long-range weather forecasting have said the whole of Britain should be prepared for this winter to be the most severe since 1947, which saw the UK hit by relentless snow and some of the lowest temperatures on record. Heavy snow is set to cripple parts of the UK while temperatures threaten to stay below-average until the beginning of spring.

With government forecasters extending severe weather warnings for ice across virtually the entire northern half of the country it’s important to be careful. Slips, trips and falls are the most common types of accident in life generally and, thankfully, the consequences of many falls on snow or ice are simply minor bumps and bruises.

However this is not always the case and in 2012/13 hospitals saw admissions of more than 7,000 patients as a result of slips, trips or falls on snow or ice, according to figures from the Hospital Episode Statistics for England. The consequences of a fall for older people especially, can be more serious. RoSPA have issued special tips for older people to help them avoid falling in slippery conditions and in an earlier post we gave some general advice for all ages.

Remember - as well as slips and trips on pavements and in public places, many people fall over on their own footpaths and driveways. Take care in these places too; just remember “Ice and snow? Take it slow!”
