As many New Year resolutions are linked to weight loss and getting fit it’s hardly surprising that gyms see a spike in memberships in January and February. Just over 12% of gym memberships are in January, compared to an average of 8.3% per month for the rest of the year (with February coming in second at 9.3%) according to the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association.

It’s also the time of year more and more people take to the streets in preparation for up-coming marathons and other races. There are over 500 marathons every year, with the oldest person ever to complete one being 100 and the youngest just 3 years old. In 2012 the London Marathon was world's largest marathon with 36,748 finishing the race.

While the marathon is the most run event, it’s also the worst trained for. A survey of city marathons revealed that half of the competitors ran only 26 miles in total in a whole week, which is less than 4 miles a day. They then expect to be able to run the full 26 miles in one go. As the saying goes, fail to prepare and you prepare to fail (or suffer some nasty injuries, not in the least to your pride!)

While playing sport and doing regular exercise is undisputedly good for us, it can carry a certain level of risk if not done properly.

Sports Injuries Can be Caused by:

  • Not warming up properly before exercising
  • Using inadequate equipment or poor technique
  • pushing yourself too hard (overtraining)

Serious sporting injuries often require medical care and attention, especially if you’re hoping to make a quick recovery. Unfortunately sometimes patients do not receive the most appropriate investigations or treatment and this is referred to as Clinical or Medical negligence (see these posts on Medical Negligence Claims and The Clinical Anatomy of a Medical Negligence Compensation Claim).

Medical negligence relating to sports injuries can occur in a number of different ways, injuries can be misdiagnosed, mistreated, or missed entirely, delaying the patient’s recovery, or making an injury much worse. Musculoskeletal injuries, where bone and muscle damage occur, are common and a delay in diagnosis, misdiagnosis or inadequate treatment can cause long term problems.

If you trip or fall while participating in a sporting activity, or if your sporting accident was caused by a legal tackle from another player then, of course, you would not be entitled to make a personal injury compensation claim (unless you suffered from clinical negligence after the injury). However if faulty equipment, poorly maintained playing surface or an illegal tackle was the reason for your injury then you may be able to pursue a claim.
