In our last two posts on sports injuries, we outlined the the problems caused when unprepared marathon runners run the risk of sporting injuries and had a look at the Top 10 sporting injuries.
In both articles the focus is primarily on the 'everday' person and their sporting endeavours, however, you can be, in-prime-of-your-life, top physical condition and still encounter a sporting injury when most of the world is watching.
Here are just five of the most iconic sporting injuries and, if you can stomach it, wherever you see a , you can watch a video of the injury take place...
Evander Holyfield - Ears Bitten Off (Almost)
This was bout number two and with his ferocious reputation fading away, 'Iron' Mike Tyson had previously lost against 'The Real Deal' Evander Holyfield by way of Technical Knock Out (TKO).
Tyson was sporting a large cut over his right eye by the end of Round 2 and was claiming Holyfield had been headbutting him. These allegations were proven 'accidental.'
At the start of Round 3, Tyson emerged from his corner without a mouth guard and was ordered back to his corner to re-insert it. Despite the order, eventually, during a clinch, Tyson bit the top of Holyfield's right ear before spitting it out. Tyson claimed to the referee that Holyfield's bleeding ear was the result of punches. By the time the round was out, Tyson had attempted to take a chunk out of Holyfield's left ear and was disqualified from the bout and had his boxing licence revoked for a year.
Evander Holyfield can now laugh with Mike Tyson at what was one of the most horrific inflicted personal injuries in sports history...
Nancy Kerrigan - Bruised not Broken
Figure Skating, American, Nancy Kerrigan fell victim to the kind of criminal injuries normally associated with bad TV dramas when her skating rival Tonya Harding was part of a conspiracy to break her leg, one of her co-conspirators being Harding's now ex-husband. As a result, another man, Shane Stant was hired to carry out the assault.
Stant failed to get to Kerrigan in her home town in Massachusetts so followed her to an official practice session on the eve of the 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Detroit, where TV crews were...
Using a police baton, Stant carried out the attack on Kerrigan, bruising her thigh. The raw footage of Kerrigan moments later crying on the floor and shouting, repeatedly, 'Why!?' became international news rapidly.
Although the two fomer skaters enjoy a level of infamy for their parts in the attack, both have achieved extremely contrasting reality TV stardom and Harding continued to have brushes with the law after a mediocre attempt at a boxing career which she gave up citing 'asthma problems.'
Terry Butcher/Paul Ince - Blood, Sweat and Cheers for England
Footballing (and brilliant) defensive, rock Terry Butcher helped to ensure England's entry to the Italia '90 World Cup with an unforgettable performance in a qualifier in Sweden.
Butcher sustained a deep cut to his forehead after a collision, early in the game. England's Phyiso patched Butcher up with stitches and hastily wrapped his head in bandages so that he could continued playing.
His constant heading of the ball (he was playing in the centre of defence) aggravagted the cut and Butcher finished the game with his white England shirt nearly as red as England's famous 'away' shirt.
Paul Ince, (the brilliant,) self nicknamed 'Guv'nor' in defensive midfielder, seven years later, put in a similar display for England's successful France '98 World Cup qualifying campaign against Italy and immediately drew references to Terry Butcher because of the spilled 'claret' on his shirt.
Derek Redmond - Hamstring Horror
"Force is measured in kilograms. Speed is measured in seconds. Courage? You can't measure courage." An incredible tagline to be associated with by an International Olympic Committee 'Celebrate Humanity' video. We'll get to the ironic bit in a second...
At the '92 Barcelona Olympics, British 400 metre semi-finalist, Derek Redmond was a favourite to ease through to the final. At just over the half way mark in the race, Redmond broke down in a heap and stopped after his hamstring snapped an all too common and very painful sporting injury.
Despite the race having been won and over, Redmond, leapt to his feet and began to hobble, still in his designated lane around the back straight of the track and as he approached the final hundred metres of circuit, his father rushed past track security, to help his injured son's clear ambition to just finish the race.
Redmond, junior, bursting uncontrollably into tears, leant on his proud father's shoulder for support as 65,000 stadium spectators rose to their feet in a standing ovation, as the two of them crossed the finish line. It's still to this day, one of the most touching and emotional images in sport.
This is a proud piece of footage for the Olympics... who officially disqualified Redmond and stated on record that he "Did Not Finish" the race because his father had helped him.
David Busst - Career Ending Leg Break
David Busst VS Manchester United, in his last top flight, professional game... Those who know and saw, will never foget.
It's the best part of 20 years but we still can't bring ourselves to look at that image of Coventry City footballer David Busst's career ending in between Man Utd's Brian McClair and Denis Irwin, which even prompted legendary Man Utd 'goalie,' the big Dane, Peter Schmeichel to vomit on the pitch (allegedly) before seeking counsel after the game along with other players.
Had Busst sustained that particular sporting injury in the 1970s his leg would have been amputated and even in the mid 90's he came close to losing the limb. Whilst in hospital, Busst contracted hospital acquired infection, MRSA, which caused further damage to the tissue and muscle in the injured part of his leg.
After nearly 30 operations to save his career, Busst officially retired from the game from what is still widely regarded as one of the worst sporting injuries ever seen in top flight English football.
