First it was Yuppies, then Chavs and now MAMILs. This latest acronym with which we can identify, segregate and lampoon a section of society, has been set aside for Middle Aged Men In Lycra. A Google Image Search for MAMILs would have you believe this strictly refers to the plethora of middle-aged cyclists who seem to recently have appeared on our streets as if from nowhere. In fact it can refer to any 'older' gentleman who spend their spare time squeezed into inapropriately-tight fitting leisurewear in pursuit of a sporting activity.
I confess, in an attempt to improve my health and general well-being, I have recently joined the ranks of the MAMIL and can be seen squeezed into a pair of running tights, running through town and countryside as I train for this years London Marathon. I maintain that beyond the charity I'm raising for, my main reason for doing this is to improve my long-term health - and it's most definitely not some form of mid-life crisis! Whatever my motivation, I'm certain at the end of it all, (once I have recovered!) I will feel better about myself.
We all, at some point in our lives, decide we need to make a change for the better, whether it be something relatively simple like giving up sugar in our tea, starting a diet or taking up a new hobby - whilst some of us feel that an altogether more 'drastic' change is required.
Cosmetic surgery continues to rise in popularity. According to official figures, around 8000 women in the UK have breast implants every year, and this figure is expected to rise in 2013. I’m sure we all remember the awful stories in the news about women suffering from ruptured implants, specifically PIP Implants which are breast implants manufactured by the French company Poly Implant Prothèse (P.I.P.).
More than 47,000 women in the UK have had P.I.P. implants, including around 3,000 NHS patients who had reconstructive surgery following the removal of breast tumours. For those who didn’t follow the story, it was revealed that the French manufacturer had used inferior, industrial grade, silicone in their breast implants. Women in France were advised to have their implants removed due to the risk of rupture which would then leak silicone into the bloodstream. In March 2010 the French authorities alerted the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency) that they had ceased any distribution, export and use of the P.I.P. gel implant. The MHRA immediately banned all use of P.I.P. implants in the UK.
If you had P.I.P. implants and are concerned about the dangers it is recommended that you go and see your GP.
Signs That A Breast implant Has Ruptured
(include but are not limited to):
- Burning sensation, tingling, swelling, numbness or redness in or around the affected breast
- Hard lumps surrounding the implant or in the armpit
- A change in breast size or distortion
- Softening or hardening of the breast
- Pain or tingling down the arm
If you are suffering from any of these symptoms then see your GP immediately.
Time Running Out for P.I.P. Breast Implant Compensation Claims
If you’ve had P.I.P. implants and had to have them removed or replaced due to health concerns you may be entitled to make a claim for compensation. Even if the clinic where you had the surgery is no longer trading you may still be able to claim.
Usually, there is a time-limit of up to three years on clinical negligence cases such as these, but in this case, even if you had the implants over three years ago you can still claim, as the three-year time limit begins from the time it became clear an injury initial ban on these implants took place in March 2010 and public knowledge came shortly after. You still have time to make a claim, but time is running out!
